Leather has its place every season. The biker chic look has been rockin’ it since 2010 with biker pants, boots and jackets and this tough-love look will continue just as strong this autumn/winter. Leather also takes a classier turn this season as we see pencil skirts, shorts, shift dresses and more tailored jackets expand the reach of this fabric above and beyond the casual realm.
Teaming leather and lace might sound a little ‘Madonna’, but get this look right and you’ll be rocking a tough and understated sexy, rather than an 80s overkill. Even though I was old enough to suffer this look in the 80s, I can honestly say I wasn’t brave enough…or maybe that was silly enough…to go all ‘Madonna’, but I am smarter this time around and will certainly be working the more sophisticated version of this look.
How to Rock chic, not cheap –
Opt for lace pieces with a more vintage, open-weave rather than the ultra-pretty or more feminine, delicate visions that we conjure up with any mention of the word ‘lace’. Combine these slightly tougher knits with the lightness of winter floral prints and add an edge with leather.
For just a hint of the leather and lace look, try accessories on for size. Tassels are huge this season from bags to shoes to purses, cut-outs and eyelets in your leather accessories can also render a fabulous texture. Lace also rears its head in add-on pieces like ballet flats, heels, gloves, stockings and clutches.
Play with the contrast of these two vastly different finishes and keep experimenting until you find the perfect balance and blend for your style.
