Embrace Your Geekness Day

You know something has gone wrong in the world when you google geek and a photo of Johnny Depp comes up…just because he is wearing glasses!

As much as I find the talented Mr. Depp adorable, he’s not making me want to embrace my geekness.

And for the record…just because you wear glasses, it does not make you a nerd, a geek or a hipster!

Nearly every photo I found under any of these three topics had the person in the photo wearing glasses. Did I miss that memo? Maybe I didn’t see it because I didn’t have my glasses on?!

I should just concede though. If this girl in the mint skinny jeans, checked shirt, and polka dot sweater is called nerdy just because she has glasses on, then I am a geek/nerd. However, I prefer to go with those in the know and call myself a hipster (and I’m not talking about a pant style, underwear type or someone who has had a hip-replacement!). Although I am pretty sure I am too old to be a hipster, I would definitely wear this look! After all, mint skinny jeans – they are everywhere and on everyone right now, mixed prints – another trend that is hot and everywhere, so what is so geeky about this look?

Now, this pic of the cast from “Big Bang Theory”, I get the geek reference!

Perhaps I am taking the geek thing too personally. You know, “back when I was young” , it hasn’t always been a flattering and stylish label.

But these days things are different. There is nothing wrong with embracing your geekness, or nerdiness. You may even recall I re-blogged a post a couple of weeks ago about DIY Geeky Heels. One of the things I loved about those heels is that they reminded me of the most recent collection from Australian design duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales at Romance Was Born.

Clearly comic books are the inspiration for this collection. I love the bright pinks, mixed pattern and the mint green…wait…there is something vaguely familiar about that description???

If you want to embrace your geekness but can’t quite go the whole Romance Was Born look, then I would suggest testing the geek waters in a pair of the comic book heels above. Of course you could always still have your Romance Was Born and not be too comical if you pulled other elements out of the looks from the runway.

If you just wear the dress with simple accessories you can express your geek pride without going to the extreme.

I think this dress would look lovely with simple black ballet flats and small stud earrings. Let the dress be the focus of your geek-a-liciousness!

So, on this Embrace Your Geekness Day, don’t be afraid to go into the comic book waters. Keep your look focused on one key piece and you too will be a wonder woman.

NB: I have just proved to you all what a geek I am, even without my glasses on!
