How to Wear Socks and Open Toe Shoes – My Way

Because I have decided to embrace this trend as a way of getting more use out of my beloved open toe shoes, I thought it only appropriate to share with you how to wear socks and open to shoes as done my way.

I’ve only used socks that I already had in the sock drawer, but I can tell that I’m going to need to do a bit of sock shopping to get the most out of this trend.

Please keep in mind it is still winter here in the Southern Hemisphere so you may need to wear your sunglasses when looking at my legs! I started with a midi-skirt that I wear all the time in the winter with tights and boots. To make it a little more spring appropriate I have matched the skirt up with a pair of neutral/nude coloured socks and my mustard coloured cork platform heels. This adds a little more colour to the look through the brighter shoe and keeps my toes from getting frostbite!

I actually really like this look and am looking forward to translating it and using it with all of my midi-skirts and an assortment of my open toe shoes.

In the past I would never have worn stockings or tights with open toe shoes and a cocktail dress. Which in the colour months would have meant cold legs and a lot of fake tan smell. But now, adding these hounds-tooth print stockings is perfectly acceptable.

Here’s the same textured stockings with a different pair of peep-toe heels. This will be a great look with a pencil skirt and blazer for work.

This look is a little more fun, thanks to the polka dot socks! The bright orange plays off the neutral colour of the socks and the polka dots add a bit of whimsy for those times when you want to kick up your heels and have some fun!

It was raining today but I thought I would practice what I preach and still work with socks and open toe shoes. For this look I decided to play up the striped effect of the back wedge by wearing a pair of white socks.

To keep the top half warm I am also wearing a pair of two-tone grey skinny jeans, a white long-sleeved thermal shirt and a grey cowl-neck sweater dress. I like the contrast between the socks and shoes. It adds a bit of fun to an otherwise simple and unassuming outfit.

Well, there you have it. Some of my ideas on how to wear socks and open toe shoes. I suspect you’ll be seeing this look a bit more from me and on the stylish streets over the next season.

How would you pull together a look using socks and open toe shoes?

Or is it just not your thing?

I had a teacher in the 2nd grade who rang my Mum and complained that I was wearing socks with JC sandals. She was a cow and you are spot on,

Who did she think she was?
      The Fashion Police?!
      That is crazy lady stuff!
Hope she hasn’t scarred you from wearing the look. 🙂

Scarred forever obviously. Still remember it with great pain, embarrassment and still get a spike of humiliation every time I see someone doing it or think of it.
Clearly i love those things because it also makes me happy that other people can be so subversive, though I unfortunately cannot.

I do understand…I love to sing but had one of the “Popular” girls in 5th grade make a nasty comment and that comment kept me from accepting opportunities to sing solos in high school! So totally get the scarred for life thing. I make myself feel better by thinking that Karma will pay those nasty people back for us.
And I bet you are a little subversive in other ways! 😉

The hounds-tooth stockings with the cream peep-toes…hot!!!!

YES. Love! Love, love, love. Especially the orange with the brown and white polka dots. Seriously fab. And those tights with the blues? Brilliant!

    • astimegoesbuy

      Thanks Misses!
I thought the orange with the polka dots was a bit of fun.
I’m kind of thinking I should have tried a pair of grey sort of vertical stripe tights with the blue dress and shoes but at least I know if I am getting dressed up and the grey doesn’t work that the black houndstooth looks pretty great too!

Can you please stop making everything you wear look so good? Sheesh! ;-P
I think I like the plain white sock with the black wedges best, but I love the stockings, too.

Trust me, there is plenty that doesn’t work on me…but after nearly 50 years I hopefully don’t have too much of it in my wardrobe! 🙂
I was really happy with how the white socks worked with the black shoes.

LOVE the hounds-tooth stockings! And what you paired them with, it looks great!

Wow, you’re so brave to don socks with sandals! I don’t know if I will ever have the courage to be that trendy. 🙂 I *love* the stockings and blue heels!! Oh, my goodness… so lovely. I might wear stockings with peep toe shoes now because of this!

    • astimegoesbuy

      Mary Ann,
Some of your vintage style dresses, peep toes and stockings will be fantastic!
Glad that I have inspired you.
It is a little brave but I am becoming more brave the longer I write this blog!:)

  • Mnemosyne

    Nope, can’t do it! lol
sorry, the idea of socks in sandals has always bothered me, doesn’t matter how much you play it up.
I have worn black tights in a black platform peep-heel before with a silverish-black midi-skirt and I have no issue with that…
But there are just some trends you just can’t get used to.

  • Magical Effects of Thinking

See, I’m conflicted with the sock/shoe issue. On one had I think it is adorable, like the pics show, but I’m a bit of a ‘fraidy cat, and just haven’t put the sock to shoe yet. I think I’ll look old lady, or crazy lady.

    • astimegoesbuy

      I worried about that too.
So I started with wearing patterned and textured tights, then moved into textured stockings with peep toe shoes and the occaisional shorts, socks and ankle boots. Now I am ready for the socks and open toe shoe thing. You can kind of grow into it. Plus it gives you a chance to figure out what works for you and your wardrobe. I would just recommend being careful of not looking too costume or retro by being head to toe 50s. And make sure you have a heel on your open toe shoes or you could look a little like a nana. 🙂
      Be brave! Be bold!
