Go on! I dare you. Can you name one great Australian director?
You should be able to. I’ll give you a clue.
Got it yet?
Male, about 50…he’s Australian…so he probably goes by a nickname. After all, any Australian worth salt has a nickname.
Need more clues?
What? You still have figured it out?
Right on the tip of your tongue?
If you’re not Australian, that probably didn’t make it much easier.
How about this one?
It should be getting easier.
Yep, that’s it…what’s his name???
…shoot, that doesn’t seem right…
YES! Mark Anthony “Baz” Luhrmann!
Now I’m not sure where the “Baz” comes from? I know I have only been in Australia 11 years but usually blokes nicknamed “Baz”, are actually named “Barry”…not Mark Anthony?!
Best known for The Red Curtain Trilogy, which includes his films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!. In 2008, he released his film Australia, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman and this year will see the release of his much-anticipated The Great Gatsby. As always he’s got at least one Aussie in the cast, Elizabeth Debicki, as Jordan Baker. She’s a stunner. I would expect to see a fair bit more of her in the coming years.
Tonight the Fashion Mister and I are heading to a Jazz night both in honour of Ballarat’s Heritage Week and The Great Gatsby. Then at the end of the month we are attending the opening night of “The Great Gatsby”. Lucky me! I get to dress up for both!
That alone qualifies “Baz” as one great Australian director in my book.
Have you seen any of Baz’s movies? Do you have a favourite?
