Item #2 on the Lust Have list is the The Chanel Handbag. preferably black, quilted and with a chain. In other words = CLASSIC!
I don’t think it gets any better than this handbag. And I don’t know a single girl who loves handbags who doesn’t have this bag on her lust have list. BUT, most of us “regular” girls can’t afford one. Even a good used one is still going to cost more than my monthly mortgage payment!
Next year, for the big 5-0, we are taking a small group of friends to Hong Kong. We are planning on eating, shopping and drinking ourselves mad for 4 days to celebrate. My gift to myself will be a Chanel handbag. However, until then, I will have to find a substitute.
This Rebecca Minkoff bag can be had for about $500 from one of my favourite online stores, Shopbop.com. but I have to remember that my overall budget for is $1000 and I can’t justify the gorgeous bags by Marc Jacobs or Rebecca Minkoff…as much as they try to tempt me. Sweetly calling my name from the computer screen…I can not falter…I must be strong…keep looking!
At $400 this Kate Spade bag from Nordstrom is getting to a better price and is worth the money if you have it to spend. But I would like something a little less expensive if I can find it.
Trouble is, I don’t want it to look cheap. Can I even get leather for less than $200? This may be the toughest search.
This Tilli bag from The Iconic almost fits the bill. At $229 it is pretty darn close to being reasonably priced. The patent leather is classic. The gold hardware is simple and sophisticated. I could see myself with this little lovely.
But just for fun, what do we have at the lower end?
I’ve dropped into ASOS for these last two options. Why? Because every fashionista on a budget is shopping at ASOS these days and they have a wide variety of styles and prices.
I like the whimsy of this tote dressed as a black quilted handbag. Would I buy it? Probably not. Even at less than $85, it really isn’t my style. But I wish it were! The price is right. The sense of humour is amusing and if I only wanted a tote for carrying things to and from work…I might go there. However, I want something with more versatility. That I can wear with anything, and the tote just won’t cut it.
The second option from ASOS has a great FANTASTIC price at $27.20! It has a long, cross body chain which is handy when out because it leaves both hands free for drinks and food or whatever else you need to be doing. At the price it would certainly allow for splurges on other items of my Lust Have list.
I’m going to have to think about this one. The choice is going to be difficult.
What do you think? Splurge a little now or save now and splurge on something else?

I say go for the budget-friendly one now and save for the Chanel – that thing is a beauty!!! I do love that tote. 🙂 I am a purse girl and you are right about that Chanel being on my lust list, which is funny because I would probably use it with Keens or Danskos – not that there is anything wrong with that. Thanks for doing the great research! Personally, I have an awesome consignment shop where I can get high end bags that look like new for half the price. By the way, love your photo on your blog. Audrey Hepburn is my absolute favorite!
June 1st, 2012 at 07:36
Thanks,
I’m really leaning toward budget this time around but not cheap looking.
There is only a little over a year until the big 5-0 and then I can go all out and buy the Chanel as a treat to myself. 🙂
It would get worn with EVERYTHING so the cost per wear would make it truly reasonable.
Is there a link to your consignment shop? I could always check it out for future topics!
Cheers,
Laura

I agree, budget now…splurge later. Anticipation only sweetens the euphoria!

Very true words of wisdom!
I know the thought of buying the Chanel bag for my big ZERO birthday makes me almost look forward to being that age! 🙂

I’m approaching the big 40 and my blog has got me thinking and trying new things. I’m starting to look forward to the next decade! After all, Bette Davis said “Old age is not for sissies!!!”
June 3rd, 2012 at 09:08
My 40s were the best.
It seemed as if everything finally came together and I finally had the confidence to just be myself.
I hope yours are as fantastic as mine have been.
It’s a good quote but I hate to think of the 40s as “old age”, I think you might be going into the “middle ages” but have a few decades before the “OLD” ones! 🙂

Completely agree!
I want one so badly it isn’t funny! 🙂
Well maybe it is a little funny, but I really do want one!

As much as I love Kate Spade, I say save it up for the real deal! It’s a Chanel flap! Don’t waste your time on quilted imitators. Haha 🙂

Thanks Janice!
Good advice. 🙂
Agree the KS bags are lovely buth they aren’t Chanel.

Save $ for Chanel!! 🙂
June 1st, 2012 at 16:01
I really, REALLY want the Chanel!
And who knows, I may end up owning something that the step-daughters actually want to inherit. 🙂
Cheers,
Laura
June 1st, 2012 at 10:07
Inherited a vintage Chanel but got stolen…one of the worst days ever 😦 Love the post!
June 1st, 2012 at 15:44
How horrible!
I’m sure I would have been in tears…first of joy on inheriting it, then of sadness for the loss.
It makes me sad just thinking about it. 😦
June 1st, 2012 at 12:41
I love that Kate Spade bag – I could have that and not need anything else! Oh by te way let me know if you’d like my “Hong Kong to do List” 🙂
June 1st, 2012 at 15:46
YES Please!
We have been a couple of times but I always like to see what others suggest because we find something new every time we go to HK.
Plus, I need to come up with options for a the group and be a good tour guide offering suggestions. So happy to take yours! 🙂
The Kate Spade bag is pretty nice, but I think I would always want the Chanel.
Cheers,
Laura

Save up for the real deal, trust me it’s worth the wait. The classic colours are classic for a reason. It’s the colours that are harder to come by.
June 1st, 2012 at 15:51
I agree, classic is classic for a reason.
Definitely leaning to a less expensive black bag for now so I can have the Chanel next year.
Still haven’t told the Fashion Mister…good thing he doesn’t read the blog!
Not that he would mind but I can hear him saying, “Another handbag”? 🙂

So until then it is save, save, save!

I also have had that bag on my list for years– it is just plain gorgeous! I am also a fashionista, but being a college student, I can’t drop several thousand dollars for a bag (the tuition bill, sadly, comes before Chanel). Thank you for the witty commentary and for looking at various versions of the bag at a variety of prices. And thank you for following my blog, as well.
Oh, could you do a version involving Alexander McQueen? I have been begging my parents for one of his scarves for years, but at $500 a scarf, the argument has not gone very far. Thanks.
July 15th, 2012 at 10:32
I LOVE scarves!
And I have a ri-donk-ulous story about both the high and low end of scarf buying.
I’ll do a bit of research and see what I can pull together for you. 🙂
Totally understand not being able to afford the Chanel bag. It’s a bit extravagent but I think I deserve after 50 years!
I’ll leave you a message when I know I’ll be publishing the scarf article/articles.
But feel free to come back anytime! 🙂
Cheers,
Laura
July 15th, 2012 at 10:36
Thank you:)
I definitely agree that you deserve the bag (hopefully I will be able to afford one once my education is paid off).
Oh, and if you are interested, my blog is going to put a post up on comparing the $8000 Birkin Bag to the $300 Michael Kors bag (they are very similar).
Thank you again.

[…] Handbag – this is the handbag from my lust have list – cost […]
July 16th, 2012 at 00:32
Since 1986 I’ve been dreaming about one day owning a real Chanel bag. And when I think about it, if I added up the cost of all the less expensive bags I’ve bought since then, I could have probably bought a whole wardrobe by now. Ah hind site. I happen to love the Rebecca Minkoff version, but like most of the other commenters, I say hold out for the real thing. Besides, time goes by super quick when we’re older:)
Becca (narcissista.me)
July 16th, 2012 at 00:42
Becca,
I fully agree about time going which is why I have decided to splurge and treat myself to something I normally wouldn’t.
Clothing fashions change so quickly these days and my size fluctuates a little so I thought if I wanted to splurge it should be on a classic handbag. Plus, I just love a good handbag! The cost per wear will make it a bargain. 🙂
Even though the big 5-0 is a year away I have already started to get nervous about whether I have chosen the right bag. I hope I don’t make myself crazy before I actually get to 50!
Cheers,
Laura

July 28th, 2012 at 00:41
That’s exactly what I’m thinking.
Do the Chanel bag next year when it is a big deal and I’ll be sure to have the bag forever after!

Chanel is definitely worth saving for. classic and timeless elegance!
great selection, too!

I’m definitely saving for a Chanel bag but after my recent post of the grey chanel bag, I’m thinking I want a grey one more than the classic black!

I would take a couple of classes on purse construction and working with leather and make several – one for me and each of my best women frieds – before I spent $5,000 on a handbag. 🙂 But that’s just me. So when my honey wants to dine out, it has to be at a restaurant whose food I haven’t yet figured out how to replicate. I went through a stage where I wanted to make all our own bagels … wow, after taking a couple of classes, that was STILL a lot of work. 🙂
August 6th, 2012 at 04:55
Karen,
You are far more determined than I! I’m not the most patient of people and I don’t think I could sit through classes, pay attention enough to be REALLY good at leather work, practice until I felt confident that I could do it well, and then make myself a bag. Far easier to work some extra shifts, save for a couple of years and treat myself to the finished product! 🙂
Cheers,
Laura
August 6th, 2012 at 05:10
I’m not sure I’m “determined” but just have a different idea of working hard for something. 🙂 I always hated working extra shifts but I would take a series of classes into the wee hours to master something new! For instance, I once enrolled in a month long kayak-making class because I didn’t want to pay the cost of a new kayak! And when I was sailing a lot, I borrowed an upholstering sewing machine and made a couple of sails. Now, compared to your working extra shifts and enjoying a lusted after purse (and I agree – the Chanel handbag you have your eyes on is great!), I’m a complete and utter lunatic. 🙂
August 6th, 2012 at 08:34
LOL!
Oh well, sanity is over-rated! 🙂
And I suppose it is all just part of being individuals, we see and do things differently.
Cheers,
Laura
August 16th, 2012 at 00:34
yes…Yes…YEs…YES… I have the first one and it goes with every dress I own…the chain strap seals the effect. And, I recently saw this same purse in green, which is simply stunning.
August 16th, 2012 at 04:45
It’s a fantastic classic bag.
I have seen the green too.
Other than the black, I could be swayed by the grey patent version I have seen…gorgeous!

Save for the real thing! The way I see it is that the other bags are also super nice and this way you wont have to ‘leave them behind’ when you get the creme de la creme!
September 11th, 2012 at 14:06
I’m definitely getting a Chanel next year for the big 5-0 and managed to only spend $99 on a great black quilted bag that will get me through until then. 🙂

I’m so glad you visited my blog! I love yours. My GST was my first Chanel and now I have the wallet. I have a vintage Chan scarf from my mom. Yeah!
January 12th, 2013 at 09:55
I love Chanel but all I own at this point is a scarf.
That will change this year when I FINALLY buy myself a handbag.
Trouble is I can’t decide exactly which one I want. 🙂

Laura
January 12th, 2013 at 10:05
Sadly I know what you mean. You need a day bag and a smaller evening bag. I’m working on getting a more dressy one. A girl can dream

Exactly!
Dreams give us something to work for and a happy place to go when we need to escape. 🙂

I love that little cross the body and bought my 18 year old daughter something similar for part of her Christmas and she loves it. I have to say I too love the classic Chanel handbag. Its the girls Ferrari!
January 13th, 2013 at 09:56
So agree!
It is the handbag of a lifetime and one of the few things that could actually become an heirloom. 🙂
Cheers,
Laura
January 20th, 2013 at 09:21
You deserve whatever your heart desires for your big day, I am sure you won’t regret buying a Chanel classic as your purchase will never lose its value. If you don’t mind shopping for used Chanel bags, going vintage is also an option to save since Chanel bags are always so classic and they will never go out of style. I love the ones with tassels or tweed, a good handbag will last forever and you can love it forever 🙂
January 20th, 2013 at 11:32
I’m always checking out the vintage Chanel bags but there is just something about a brand new one that makes me wait.
And as you say, a Chanel handbag is such a classic that it will be stylish forever. 🙂

I think I already commented but I wanted to tell you to make sure you decide if you want the lamb or the caviar leather. Caviar is more durable, less scratches, shows wear and tell much less. Just do your research and make sure you know what you want! I got the caviar and just got the matching caviar wallet and I’m super happy I did. It’s a bit pricier but I think worth it cos I use my bag every day.
January 27th, 2013 at 11:16
Thanks for the tip!
I didn’t even realize there were leather options. Looks like I should do a little more research over the next 7 months.

dream of a chanel bag…one day soon I hope, i keep dropping major hints to my husband
January 29th, 2013 at 15:32
Me too, until the point where I just decided I was going to have to buy it myself!
He is paying for the trip to Hong Kong as a 50th b-day present but I’ll buy myself the Chanel Bag. 🙂
Cheers,
Laura
February 15th, 2013 at 10:12
Form personal experience, if you really want an expensive bag, shoes or anything…SAVE FOR IT. Cuz by the end of the day you’ll use it way more and will last you a life time and that bag that bought for the time being won’t be worth it. If your on a budget save your money for the real thing. Thank you for visiting my blog ❤ ;**
February 15th, 2013 at 17:46
That’s exactly what I am doing…saving for the real deal for my 50th birthday later this year. 🙂
